Professional Teeth Cleanings
At Smiles at Goose Creek, our dentist provides comfortable teeth cleaning procedures to provide you with quality service and improved oral health.
What is a Teeth Cleaning?
A professional teeth cleaning is a simple and painless procedure performed by our dentist to eliminate plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums and to identify potential oral health issues like decay or gum disease.
Professional teeth cleanings are important to:
Detect and Prevent Gum Disease: A buildup of plaque on the teeth and gums can lead to gum disease, a leading cause of tooth loss. Because brushing and flossing isn't enough to completely remove all plaque from the teeth and gums, professional teeth cleanings are essential to maintain good oral health.
Prevent Tooth Decay: Plaque buildup on the teeth can also result in tooth decay. Professional teeth cleanings, combined with proper at-home care, can prevent cavities.
What to Expect from a Teeth Cleaning at Our Dental Office
Consultation and Oral Exam
Your appointment will start with a quick consultation with our dentist to discuss your dental history and any present dental health concerns such as pain or sensitivity. Our dentist will also conduct an oral exam, looking for signs of decay, gum disease and any other abnormalities that may be present.
Plaque and Tartar Removal
After the exam, our dentist will start the teeth cleaning process by removing deposits of plaque and tartar from the teeth. This process usually involves the use of manual dental instruments.
Polish and Floss
Once the large deposits of plaque and tartar have been removed manually, our dentist will use a powered handpiece resembling an electric toothbrush to remove smaller deposits and polish the surfaces of your teeth. Then your teeth will be flossed.
Rinse and Fluoride
You'll receive a final rinse to eliminate any remnants of the cleaning paste or other debris, after which our dentist will apply fluoride to your teeth.
Based on the results of your exam, our dentist may recommend additional treatments to eliminate decay or address gum disease. We can schedule these follow-up procedures for you so you can stay on track to achieve good oral health.
Post-visit Cleaning Care
There's a lot more to oral care than professional teeth cleanings. You must also be diligent in your at-home care and maintain a strict schedule of biannual teeth cleanings. To achieve and maintain optimum oral health:
- Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day, using a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Floss at least once per day after brushing, using a clean strip of floss for each tooth
- Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash after brushing and flossing and in between meals
